Kadam tree is used as firewood, furniture wood, decorative plant, shade giving tree and also a potent medicinal herb. It is a good aphrodisiac and wound healer.
Botanical name – Anthocephalus indicus, Anthocephalus cadamba
It has beautiful flowers. It is planted in the fences and road sides.
Raja nighantu refers three kinds of Kadamba namely –
Dhara kadamba and
Classical texts refer it in the context of
Shukrashodhana (purification of the semen),
Vamanopaga (enhance or stimulate the vomiting centres) etc.
Leaves, fruits and stem bark are usable parts of this plant. In India West Bengal, Madhyapradesh, Uttar Pradesh etc it is commonly found.
The drug is known for its cold potency and Tridoshahara property. Folk practitioners appreciate its potent anti toxic (Vishahara) effect also.

Leaf decoction for gingivitis and unstable teeth:
The fresh leaves are taken and decoction is made. This is used for gargling and mouth wash. This is effective in gingivitis and unstable teeth.
General method of preparation of decoction (kashaya) – 1 tablespoon of powder is added with 2 cups of water, boiled and reduced to 1 cup, filtered.
Cold infusion of leaves for eye wash in conjunctivitis:
kadam tree leaves are taken, ground, added to cold water, macerated well. Filtered. This is used as eye drops to relieve burning sensation and redness in conjunctivitis.
Fruit juice with sugar candy for sexual vigor, promotion of breast milk:
The matured fruit is taken and fresh juice is obtained. To this sugar and honey are added and taken. This is effective to promote sexual vigor, breastmilk and to improve the body strength.
Leaf and bark decoction for wound wash:
The leaf and bark together or individually taken and the decoction is made. This is used to wash the wounds.
Bark powder for oozing eczema and dermatitis conditions:
Stem bark is made into fine powder and applied to the wounds by mixing with ghee or it is dusted over the ulcers. It is effective in eczema and dermatosis conditions.
