The good or bad (auspiciousness or inauspiciousness) of the condition of the patient will be determined by

–       Related to the duta (messenger) – sight, conversation, dress and activities of the Duta (messenger who comes to call the physician), star (constellation), time, Thithi of the day, omen, portents, breeze,
–       Related to the physician – region (habitat of the physician) and activities of speech, body and mind (of the physician) these indicate the good or bad of the condition of the patient.

 पाख(ष) ण्डाश्रमवर्णानां सपक्षाः कर्मसिद्धये।

त एव विपरीताः स्युर्दुताः कर्मवित्तये ॥५॥

Subha Duta – means a good or auspicious messenger.

Duta is considered to be auspicious if he belongs to –

–       the same category as that of the patient – example pasanda – a person of non-vedic sects such as Kapalika, Saugata etc.
–       the same ashrama as that of the patient, ashrama here means the four stages of one’s life – like brahmachari – student, grhasta – householder, vanaprastha – hermit and sanyasi – ascetic and
–       the same varna as that of the patient i.e. casts including Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Shudra

Only such auspicious messengers would portend success in treatment. On the other hand, the messenger belonging to the other category would definitely foretell failure in the treatment.
