Kshudra Kushta: Minor Skin Diseases, Symptoms, Prognosis

Kushta – skin diseases are of 18 types. They have been sub-grouped into
7 types of Maha Kushtas (major skin ailments) and
11 types of Kshudra Kushtas (minor skin ailments) depending on the nature of manifestation, severity of presentation (in terms of signs and symptoms), the number of tissues and pathological elements involved in the pathology, the complexities associated with the conditions, prognosis and the treatment options available to address them.

Eka Kushta

Shape and appearance –
– Maha vaastu – The lesion is spread over an extended area of the skin, large lesion
– Matsya Shakala Upamam – Resembles the skin of a fish

Signs –
– Matsya Shakala Upamam Mahaa Sthaanam – Large lesion resembling the skin of a fish in appearance and contour, appears scaly
– Aswedanam – Absence of sweating around the lesion

Predominant symptom  –
– Aswedanam – Absence of sweating around the lesion
Dosha Predominance – Vata and Kapha Doshas

Charmakhya Kushta

Charma (Charmaakhya) Kushta
Shape and Appearance – The skin around the lesion appears (resembles) like the skin of an elephant in Charma Kushta

Signs –
– Bahalam – The afflicted part of the skin in Charma Kushta is thick and devoid of layers (apatralam)
– Hasti Charmavat – Skin appears / resembles the skin of an elephant

Dosha Predominance – Vata and Kapha Doshas

Kitibha Kushta

Kitibha Kushta
Shape and Appearance – The part of the skin afflicted by Kitibha Kushta is blackish brown in color and gives a feel of wound scar on touch

Signs –
Shyaavam – The part of skin afflicted by Kitibha Kushta is blackish brown (blackish blue, grey) in color
Kina Khara Sparsham – Rough (coarse) on touch, gives a feel of touching the scar of a wound
Parusham – Dry (rough, hard)

Dosha Predominance –
Kitibha Kushta is predominantly caused by dual vitiation of Vata and Kapha Doshas

Vipadika Kushta

Vaipadika or Vipaadika Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Vaipadika Kushta presents with cracks in the palms and soles

Signs –
Paani Paada Sphutanam – Cracks in the palms and soles
Predominant Symptom
Teevra Vedanam – Severe (excruciating) Pain

Dosha Predominance – Vata and Kapha Doshas

Alasaka Kushta

Alasaka Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Alasaka presents in the form of itching boils or eruptions

Signs –
Gandaihi – Boils
Raaga – Reddish color, redness around the boils

Predominant Symptom
Kandu – Itching sensation
Dosha Predominance – Vata and Kapha Doshas

Dadru Kushta

Dadru Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Dadru Kushta presents with elevated circular patches comprising of itching eruptions (boils)
Signs –
Raaga – Redness around the lesion or patch of Dadru
Pidakaa – Eruptions, boils
Udgata Mandalam – Circular patches (lesions) with raised (elevated) margins

Predominant Symptom
Kandu– Intense itching sensation over and around the patches
Dosha Predominance –Dadru Kushta is predominantly caused by dual vitiation of Pitta and Kapha Doshas

Charmadala Kushta

Charmadala Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Charmadala Kushta presents with boils with itching and redness all around the lesion
Signs –
– Raktam – Redness around the boils
– Sphotam – Boils

Predominant Symptom
– Kandu – Itching
– Rujaa – Pain
– Dalati – erosions or cracks in the skin
– Samsparsha Asaha – Tenderness, the person doesn’t allow the afflicted part of skin to be touched

Dosha Predominance – Pitta and Kapha Doshas

Pama Kushta

Paama Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Paama Kushta manifests with itchy boils (eruptions) of white, yellowish red or blackish brown (blackish blue) color
Signs –
Shweta, Aruna, Shyaava Pidakaa – Eruptions or boils which are white, yellowish red or blackish brown in color

Predominant Symptom
Kandu – Itching
Dosha Predominance – Pitta and Kapha Doshas

Visphota Kushta

Visphota Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Visphota presents with white or yellowish red (golden yellow) areas with boils covered by thin layer of fragile skin

Signs –
Sphotaaha – Boils or eruptions
Shwetam – White color skin around the lesions or boils
Shyaavam – Yellowish Red (golden yellow) color skin around the lesions or boils
Tanu Twacha – Skin over the lesion will be thin and fragile
Dosha Predominance – Pitta and Kapha Doshas

Shataru Kushta

Shataru Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Shataru Kushta presents with multiple lesions of red or blackish brown (blackish blue) color which are painful and associated with burning sensation

Signs –
Raktam – Redness around the lesion
Shyaavam – Blackish brown or Bluish Black coloration around the lesions
Bahu Vrana – Multiple lesions

Predominant Symptom
Daha – Burning sensation
Arti – Severe Pain

Dosha Predominance – Pitta and Kapha Doshas

Vicharchika Kushta

Vicharchika Kushta
Shape and Appearance – Vicharchika presents with multiple itchy boils or eruptions or blisters of blackish brown color which are oozing

Signs –
Pidakaaha – Eruptions (boils or blisters)
Shyaavaa – Blackish Brown or Bluish Black coloration of skin around the lesion
Bahu Sraava – Excessive discharges (oozing, exudation)

Predominant Symptom
Kandu – Severe itching sensation
Dosha Predominance – Kapha Dosha

Just Before Finishing –
The term Kshudra associated with Kushta means minor or lesser. The term Kshudra might reflect a prognostic dimension because the Kushtas mentioned in this category are easier to treat in comparison to Maha Kushta type of Skin ailments.
