Marmas of the Back – Prishta Gata Marmas

Prishta Gata Marmas are the Marmas (vital points, delicate areas) located in the back of the body. These Marmas are located all along the length of the spine (vertebral column, backbone) and on either side of it. 

There are 7 Marmas located in the Prishta or Back. Each Marma is 2 in number. Therefore the number of Prushta Gata Marmas account to 14 in number.

In this article I will briefly put forth the names of these 7 Marmas and their distribution including the categories in which they are included.

Location, number, effect of injury

Kateekataruna marma Located in low back, one on either side of the back bone, on the pelvic bones (hip bone) – 2 in number – Injury leads to loss of blood, pale discoloration, awkward shape and consequent death. It is a type of Asthi marma and Kaalaantara Praanahara Marma.

Kukundara marma Located in lateral part of gluteal region (butt) on both sides of the spine – 2 in number – Injury leads to loss of sensation and paralysis of the lower parts of the body. It is a type of Sandhi marma and Vaikalyakara Marma.

Nitamba marma – Located above the pelvic region covering the viscera and between the 2 lateral parts – 2 in number – Injury leads to  emaciation of the lower parts of the body, general weakness and consequent death. It is a type of Asthi marma and Kaalantara Praanahara Marma.

Paarshwa Sandhi marmaTied up with lower parts of the hip bones, oblique and upwards and in between the hip bones – 2 in number – Injury leads to blood filled cavities of the body and consequent death in a gradual way. It is a type of Sira and Kalantara Pranahara marma.

Brihati marmaLocated at the level of Sthana Moola (chest marmas located at the lower parts of the breasts) and on both lateral parts of vertebral column – 2 in number – Injury leads to complications related to severe bleeding and gradual death.It is a type of Sira and Kalantara Pranahara marma.

Amsaphalaka marmaLocated in upper part of the back, on both lateral sides of vertebral column and at the place of union of 3 bones (scapula, humerus and clavicle) – 2 in number – Injury leads to emaciation of upper limb. It is a type of Asthi marma and Vaikalyakara Marma.

Amsa marmaLocated in between (junction of ) arm, head and neck, attached to the scapular region and shoulder – 2 in number – Injury leads to rigidity of the arm.It is a type of Snayu and Vaikalyakara Marma
