Swedana – Sweating Treatment Choices In Arthritis

Article by Dr Raghuram Y.S MD(Ayu)
Sweating treatment is done in cases of rheumatoid arthritis and osteo arthritis to improve joint flexibility and to relieve inflammation.
Initially Valuka Sweda (sand bolus fomentation) or Churna Pinda Sweda (dry powder bolus fomentation) is done to get rid of ama and morbid kapha. In case of pitta associated inflammation, the sore joints are initially addressed with a course of dhanyamla dhara (fomentation by pouring hot fermented sour liquids over the painful parts).

After relieving ama, kapha and pitta, when only vata symptoms i.e. pain and catch are predominant, Jambira Pinda Sweda shall be done. Some physicians prefer doing Naranga Kizhi directly, without conducting churna or valuka sweda or dhanyamla dhara. The results are still good.

It is not mandatory to do these treatments before conducting naranga kizhi but it is left out for the judgement of the physician to combine treatments for better results, as and when needed.

Chronic stages of RA (Jeerna or pravruddha Amavata) – where the inflammation has subsided but pain has been left over. This is the perfect area to work with Naranga Kizhi and clinch results, rather than in acute conditions.

Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata) – Osteo means bones and Arthritis means painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. Osteoarthritis is the common form of arthritis. It afflicts millions of people throughout the world. Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down over a period of time i.e. it results from the breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. OA can affect and damage any joint in the body.

Joints of the hands, Joints near the finger ends, base of the thumb, neck, lower back, hips, knees and spine are commonly afflicted by osteoarthritis. Joints on one side of the body are often more affected than those on the other. Unlike other types of arthritis, only joints are typically involved in OA.
