25 Easy, Effective Home Remedies for Vomiting And Nausea

Here are a  few home remedies to stop vomiting and nausea.

Sugar and Salt mixture
Continuous vomiting can be dangerous as it can remove essential nutrients from the body and create fluid imbalance. Sugar and salt mixture will help in balancing fluid and electrolyte imbalance. Take a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of sugar. Add this to a glass of water and drink it.

Fresh ginger

Ginger
It is one of the best remedies for stomach and entire gastro-intestinal system. It works as a natural anti-emetic to prevent vomiting and nausea. It also corrects metabolism, improves digestion and addresses aversion to food and tastelessness. Ginger neutralizes stomach acids. It contains phenols that relax stomach muscles and act like a sedative on irritated stomach tissue. It reduces the over activity of the stomach. The phenols in the ginger also help your intestine to move the digested food and toxins through your system quickly. It can be taken in capsule form, chew raw root or grate it into soup.

Methods of use:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon each of ginger juice and lemon juice and consume it many times in a day.
  • Alternatively ginger tea with little honey shall be tried. Pieces of ginger shall also be eaten with or without honey.
  • Take 15-20 mint leaves, a small ginger piece and crush them together. Press the paste on a sieve and extract juice. Take 2 tablespoon of this juice and mix with 1 tablespoon each of lemon juice and honey. Mix them well and take it twice daily.
  • Ginger tea – Wash the ginger root well. Peel it. Slice it into small pieces. Boil these pieces in 2-3 cups of water over medium heat. Boil for 5-6 minutes. Strain it into a mug. Add honey if you prefer. Sip slowly and relax.
  • Ginger ale – Place 2 cups of fresh ginger root (peeled and chopped), lemon or lime peel and 4 cups of water in a saucepan. Boil it over high heat. At an active simmer, let it sit uncovered for 10 minutes. While stirring, add sugar. Continue boiling until it is reduced to about 3 cups around another 15 minutes. Strain this over a large bowl, separate the solid. Chill the syrup in a glass container with a lid until cold or up to 7 days. Mix ¼ cup of this syrup with 1 cup of cold club soda and pour ice. Add flavours if you want to enhance taste.
  • Smash a medium sized ginger piece, add little salt and swallow
  • While travelling carry ginger bread, ginger snaps, ginger sticks or crystallized ginger

Rice Water

It helps in alleviating vomiting caused by gastritis. Use white rice to prepare rice water (white rice is rich in starch in comparison to brown rice and is easier to digest).
How to use?
Boil a cup of rice in 1 ½ cup of water and strain the solution. Drink this rice water.

Cinnamon
It helps to calm the stomach, treats nausea and vomiting especially when they are caused by digestive problems.

Cinnamon

How to use?
Add ½ – 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of boiling water. Alternatively pieces of cinnamon sticks can be used. Allow it to steep for few minutes. Strain the water. 1 tablespoon of honey can be added to the liquid after it gets warm. This should be sipped slowly. (This is contraindicated for pregnant women)

Mint

Tea made from mint can provide relief from vomiting, especially when vomiting is due to stomach upset. Mint also destroys the germs in the stomach, which may be responsible for causation of nausea and subsequent vomiting.
How to use?
Add 1 tablespoon of dried mint leaves to a cup of hot water. Allow it to steep for 5-10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink this tea. Don’t toss out the mint leaves after drinking the tea. Instead eat them. It helps in nausea and vomiting. Alternatively you can chew fresh mint leaves.

Mix one teaspoon each of mint juice and lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of honey. This mixture shall be consumed 2-3 times in a day.

Peppermint
It can be used in the form of tea or oil.
How to use?
Try rubbing some peppermint oil on your gums for quick relief. Dip a roll of a cotton swab in a few drops of peppermint oil. Apply directly to your gums and reapply if necessary. Alternatively, wash your hands thoroughly, put some oil on your finger tips and rub onto your gums

Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar helps in relieving nausea. It calms the stomach and aids detoxification. It also helps treat food poisoning and is anti-microbial. It destroys and removes the bacteria (causing vomiting) from the stomach.

How to use?
To a cup of water, add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and drink.
Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey in a glass of water. Drink and repeat as and when necessary.

The smell of vomit sometimes triggers vomiting. To freshen up your breath and prevent further vomiting, rinse your mouth with one teaspoon of vinegar diluted in ½ cup of water.

Clove
It helps in digestion and also in curing vomiting. It is highly beneficial when nausea and vomiting are caused by gastric irritability. It has anaesthetic and antiseptic properties.
How to use?
Chew some cloves or use few cloves to make a cup of tea to treat vomiting.

Clove tea –
Brew a teacup full of boiling water using 1 teaspoon clove powder, Strain the liquid and drink
Alternatively, fried cloves or their powder should be mixed in honey and swallowed.
Add few drops of clove oil to warm water and drink it

Fennel
It seeds of fennel aid digestion and relieve nausea. They are anti-microbial and helpful in treating stomach flu which might be a cause for vomiting.

How to use?
Add 1 tablespoon of crushed fennel seeds to a cup of boiling water. Allow it to steep for 8-10 minutes. Strain and drink this tea 1-2 times in a day. Honey can be added to the drink.
Alternatively chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds.

Cumin seeds
It helps in secretion of pancreatic enzymes; useful in queasy feeling is caused by digestive problems.
How to take?
Mix ½ teaspoon of ground cumin seeds in warm water and drink it
Alternatively mix 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and a pinch of nutmeg in a cup of boiling water. Let is steep for few minutes. Strain the mixture. Drink it warm.
Add some cumin powder and cardamom powder to 1 teaspoon of honey and take it

Onion Juice
It helps combat nausea and vomiting, is also a good antibiotic.
How to take?
Take 1 teaspoon of onion juice immediately when you feel the nausea
Mix 1 teaspoon of onion juice with one teaspoon of grated ginger or ginger juice. Take this at regular intervals.
Mix 2 teaspoons of honey in ½ cup of onion juice. Take 1 tablespoon of this mixture.

To ease vomiting, consume 2 table spoons of onion juice followed by the drinking of cold peppermint tea. This eases vomiting and soothes your stomach.

Cranberry Juice
It gives you instant relief from vomiting. Avoid solid food for a day.

Crackers
They are very effective for nausea and vomiting. They have a mild flavour and are easy to digest. They provide nutrition and energy to recover. Eat some saline crackers, pretzels or even a dry toast.

Lemon juice
It is fortified with all the right vitamins and minerals that can halt vomiting with a single dose. Vitamin C, proteins, magnesium, calcium, vitamin B and other nutrients are great ways by which you can revive the energy that is lost after a fit of vomiting.
How to use?
Make a mixture of water, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of sugar, and a pinch of baking soda, stir all the ingredients well and deink it.
Mix 1 teaspoon honey and 1 teaspoon lemon juice. Dip your finger into the mix and lick it off so that you take it in slowly.

Smell lemon –
Smell of citrus can cut through the murky feeling of nausea, calm your stomach and calm you. Slice the lemon in half and position it close to you so you can smell it. Make sure you are inhaling and exhaling fully.

Lime juice
Mix 1 cup water, 10 drops lime juice and ½ teaspoon sugar. Add ¼ teaspoon baking soda and drink.

Cardamom
Heat 2 cardamoms on a dry saucepan. Powder them and add a tablespoon of honey. Take frequently.

Aniseeds
They have medicinal properties that can help prevent a person from vomiting and also help in improving digestion.
How to use?
Chew aniseeds for quick relief from vomiting.

You can also sprinkle roasted aniseed on mild vegetables like carrots or pumpkin.
Take ¼ teaspoon of aniseed in half cup of boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes, Strain the liquid and drink it for instant relief.
Try aniseed on baked apples or pears

Milk toast
Bland foods can help tame your tummy. Bread absorbs excess acid, while milk coats your stomach. Only dairy (milk) can upset the stomach. So make milk toast for a happy medium.
Don’t drink milk straight away. Heat 1 cup milk until hot, but don’t boil. Put it in a bowl. Then take 1 piece of toast, slightly buttered and crumble it into the milk. Eat slowly.

Essential Oils –
Smelling essential oils like orange essential oil, bergamot etc can help in preventing nausea and vomiting.

Curry leaves –
Take 10-15 curry leaves, crush them and make paste, press this paste on a sieve and extract juice. Add 1 tsp each of lemon juice and honey. Mix well and drink this mixture twice daily.

Garlic milk –
Crush 2-3 garlic cloves to paste. Add this paste to 1 glass milk. Boil the mixture for 5 minutes. Sip this when hot. This is highly effective in controlling vomit caused by digestive problems.
