DR. Vasant Lad, Ayurvedic physician, practicing in U.S.A.
in his book “Ayurvedic cooking for self-healing” has stated
“eating bananas with milk can diminish Agni, change the intestinal flora, produce toxins and may cause sinus congestion, cold, cough and allergies. Although both of these
foods have a sweet taste and a cooling energy, their post-
digestive effect is very different-bananas are sour while milk
is sweet. This causes confusion in our digestive system and
may result in toxins, allergies and other imbalances.”
The full article on “food combing” can be seen in the internet thro’ google.
    Kindly clarify.

I have read many times that milk and banana should never ever be eaten together (however I love banana milk since i was a child).

Great recipe. Helps uplift mood too, and that too for a long stable period of time. This is unlike the burst of stimulation followed by fatigue-prone period one feels, when consuming tea or coffee.

Not sure if ‘after food’ is ideal for everyone though; it may have more benefits on empty stomach (i.e. when hungry), and then not having any food for a while (say 1-1.5 hours, depending on digestive strength) mainly because milk is not compatible with most ingredients of regular meals.

Hi, only sour fruits such as amla, sour mango etc should not be consumed along with milk. (Reference: Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana)
Sweet fruits like banana can be taken along with food / along with milk, as per Ayurveda

Several vaidyas I know have said that bananas and milk cannot be combined. I think it is not just a question of rasa and vipaka. I also know of a case where a Vata person had a chronic problem that would persist, even after years of PanchaKarma and ayurvedic herbs. When it was discovered that the person regularly had banana milkshakes and that was stopped, the problem immediately disappeared, never to return. This person did NOT have high Kapha (she had Vata prakrti/vikrti), and still the bananas and milk caused problems. I would prefer to be on the safe side, and not combine.

So, the person continued to have bananas and milk separately after that? Well, the problem could be due to bananas with milk, but it could also be just the bananas. Bananas cause a lot of congestion in the subtle energy channels in the body, particularly the not so ripe ones. For example, reducing bananas helps reduce seasonal dry cough and cold.

Namaste, Yoga ratnakara has specified not to use banana with milk, and as i am a practitioner have seen many cases of skin erruptions after continous intake of banana milk shake, we consider this as viruddha ahara, we need to accept laghu trayi’s as they have fabricated based on the era, let’s not encourage viruddha ahara.

Some Ayurveda doctors suggest , instead of Banana with milk. Banana with Ghee or Banana with Butter is better digestible than milk.

I feel like a key difference we’re not considering here is that while bananas and milk typically aren’t a good food combination, the preparation method here helps reduce the negative qualities.

Boiling the milk, for example, changes its constitution a bit and makes it easier for the body to digest (just like with chai).

And adding cardamom helps break down the milk inside the body so it doesn’t coagulate and cause congestion.
