Excess body heat, burning urination, related abdominal pain and burning sensation in palms and feet – all these symptoms suggests towards Pitta. Suppose you come home from the hot Sun you may require a simple drink to cool down the body heat fast. Here is an easy to prepare quick home remedy using Amla and Jaggery.

Amla in Ayurveda

One of the peculiar feature of Amla is, its qualities blend in with other ingredients. For example, jaggery is sweet and has Pitta balancing effect. When you give jaggery processed with Amla, it further enhances its Pitta balancing effect. This simple principle is used in the following traditional Ayurvedic home remedy.

Home remedy video

Ingredients

  • Amla churna (Amla powder) – 25 grams (1 part)
  • water – 200 ml (8 parts)
  • Jaggery – 3 – 5 grams

Procedure

Take Amla powder in a wide mouthed container, add water to it, boil over mild heat, stir continuously and reduce it to approximately 50 ml, filter it, allow it to cool it down.

Take 10 – 20 ml of this amla drink along with 3 – 5 grams of jaggery powder.
It can be taken before food for maximum effect.
It can be taken once or twice a day.

Once you prepare it, it can be stored for only one day. Means, everyday, you need to make the home remedy afresh.
It can be taken upto 2 – 3 weeks for good results.
It should not be re-heated.

Note:
The above mentioned method of boiling amla with water is Kashayam. Usually all Kashayams are given when they are mild hot. But here, we are letting it cool down, before taking it.

For making this home remedy, either coarse powder or fine powder of Amla can be taken.

If you can not spend time to prepare this home remedy, at least you can take Amla capsules along with jaggery.

Will cover those home remedies in future.
But in general, it really helps to take Trikatu Churna – quarter a small spoon two times a day after food. And it is good to take Chyawanprash regularly. But care should be taken if someone has gastritis problem, while taking Trikatu.

There is a huge advantage in making these kashayams (Kadha / kwath) at home rather than going for readymade pills.
      1. It is time consuming. So is cooking, making tea, coffee etc. Just because hotel serves readymade food, we do not go to hotel on daily basis.
      2. Of all the Ayurvedic medicines, Kashayam is fastest and most efficient dosage form.
      3. Kashayam contains water soluble active principles of herbs. Water soluble principles are readily absorbed into our body system via gastro intestinal tract.
      4. Kashayam – freshly prepared is as sterile and hygienic as boiled water.
      5. kashayams do not contain any additives like preservatives, as in case of pills.
      6. Even the aroma coming out of the vessel of Kashayam has positive effect.
      7. When one learns more about Ayurveda, the secret of success in Ayurvedic treatment lies in preparing medicines in the most traditional way, than compared to industrialized large scale methods.
      8. I will be posting a wide variety of home remedies for many ailments. Whichever is suitable, whichever herbs are available, readers can adopt them based on convenience and advice of Ayurvedic doctor.

Boil half tea spoon home made turmeric powder in a glass of milk and add three drops of cow’s ghee. Stir milk with the help of table spoon and drink daily at breakfast time if possible or else drink the same on alternate days to manage allergic conditions, cancer treatment, blood purification and skin beautification. Turmeric also helps to heal wounds and it enhances immunity. Turmeric powder If taken with milk at night, it helps to relieve muscle and joints pain caused by vata dosha.

          Dear Dr Hebbar,

Since turmeric is hot in nature, it should never be consumed alone as it will heat up the liver and make the organ dry. Care should be taken to consume turmeric powder in small quantity with milk and coolant herbs like coriander and fennel so that it normalizes the heating effect of turmeric. To consume turmeric for various health benefits, I would suggest that turmeric powder should be consumed safely in the manner described below:

Boil one tea spoon home made turmeric powder along with half tea spoon crushed coriander seeds in a glass of milk. Stir milk with the help of a spoon after adding three drops of cow’s ghee (clarified butter) into the boiling milk and drink daily at breakfast time or else drink the same on alternate days. The quantity of turmeric powder to be consumed can be adjusted according to age.

Take care and remain blessed with good health!

          Best regards,
          Kunwar Singh

Good question. She can simply use the above remedy without sugar.
Amla powder – half a teaspoon (small spoon) – once in morning and evening, before food is an excellent remedy for diabetics to relieve burning sensation. (or to cool the body).

These are the symptoms of Pitta increase. Excess Sun exposure, eating hot, pungent, sour and salt food stuff, anger, are a few reasons for Pitta imbalance.

I have this problem that I cannot take sun for too long. If I spent more than 15-30 minutes, then after returning I’ll have weakness in the whole body, like a body ache (just like the weakness of fever, except in this case there’s no real fever), for the rest of the day. Due to this, I have basically learnt to just avoid the sun for too long, but recently I’ve wondered if this might be a condition that has an easy enough diagnosis and/or cure in Ayurveda.

    Thank you,

Clearly the body is getting tired due to Pitta increase.
      Solutions –
      1. Wear a round hat so as to cover head, neck and upper part of the body. If the head is saved from the son, the tiredness intensity can be decreased by 40 – 60 %.
      2. A Sarsaparilla syrup / juice after coming home should help. OR, soak vetiver (usheera) / Sarsaparilla (Sariva) or both – two teaspoon each, in three cups of water overnight and filter. Drink that water.
      3. Rose juice can also be handy.

Thank you so much for these tips, I’m glad I asked. You are absolutely right. I wear a (cricket style) round white hat all the time because it helps reduce the intensity.

I’ll try to get Vetiver and Sarsaparilla for next summer. If you know of any online shops that sell these, please suggest.

And rose juice should also definitely be handy to keep around. Any suggestions about specific rose juice would be most welcome too.

        Thank you!

Hi, sorry for the confusion. I meant to say – swallow capsule with water and have a little jaggery. Or make jaggery water and swallow capsule with it. Water, by default is used in taking any oral medicine. For example, any churna (powder) – to be taken with honey, one can consume water after taking the mix, just to facilitate swallowing.

    Dear Madam,

Please go through this article for the treatment of Sheetapitta. — https://www.easyayurveda.com/2014/03/07/urticarial-rashes-ayurvedic-understanding-treatment-options/

Regarding the cold and Cough these are some of the remedies you can follow:

    > Turmeric is a proven anti-inflammatory agent. Add one teaspoonful of the powder or paste of turmeric to a cup of milk and take the same thrice a day.
    > Half a teaspon of Trikatu churna with honey after food one time a day.

Note: As we all are genetically different with different constitutions and patterns, we respond to treatments in many different ways. Hence Standard Ayurvedic Treatments are always individually formulated. For specific treatment, always consult with a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
