Chilblains Cure Through Ayurvedic Home Remedies

What are chilblains? 
Chilblains is a disease with redness, swelling, itching, pain and sometimes blisters in toes, fingers, nose tips, ear lobes etc.  As the name suggests, Chilblains are caused due to severe cold exposure by a person, susceptible for the condition. Chilblains cure is possible with a few lifestyle corrections and Ayurvedic home remedies.

Dosha involvement

Chilblains and Dosha involvement as per Ayurveda – Chilblains is influenced mainly by imbalance in Vata and Kapha at the level of tendons and ligaments. As ‘cold’ characteristic is common to both Vata and Kapha,  Chilblains usually has a pre-disposing factor of joint disorders. People with joint and ligament related diseases are more susceptible  to chilblains.

Ayurvedic home remedies

Chilblains home remedies as per Ayurveda – 

Mustard oil application as a preventive measure – If you had chilblains previously, chances are, you will have it this winter as well. Starting from 2 weeks before the onset of winter, start applying mustard oil to your hands and legs, leave it on for 10 -15 minutes and take a warm water bath, preferably in the morning.

Get the joint disease under control – If you have joint diseases like Rheumatoid arthritis or gout, seek appropriate treatment ahead of winter and keep them in control.

Use Trikatu powder in diet – Trikatu is a blend of three spices. You can use it in your cooking.

If Trikatu is very spicy for you, then at least make sure to include dry ginger in your diet. It keeps the joints warm, is an excellent anti inflammatory herb and boosts your digestion.

Ayurvedic herbal oils – There are many herbal oils that relieve inflammation. Seek the advice of your Ayurvedic doctor for the same.

Use more of curry leaves, lemon juice, sesame seeds and coffee.

Neem oil –  If there are open blisters causing bleeding, applying a paste of neem oil and turmeric will heal it faster.

Triphala Kwath –  Washing the affected area with triphala kwatha.

Avoid oily food – Avoid oily food till the time chilblains are not healed during winter.

Use gloves and socks that create warmth in hands and legs. Do not expose the affected parts directly to cold wind. It will increase Vata and worsen the pain and inflammation.

Ayurvedic medicines  

Commonly prescribed Ayurvedic medicines are –
Haridra Khanda – contains turmeric, ginger, long pepper along with many anti allergic and warming ingredients.
Khadirarishta – Useful in all skin conditions.
Trikatu Churna, Hingvashtaka Churna,
Madhusnuhi Rasayanam
Gandhaka Rasayana
Gandhaka Malahara – for local application
Marichadi taila for external application
