Morphology and chemical composition

Morphology of Saccharum officinarum:
Sugarcane is a type of grass cultivated in the plains of India for its commercial value by the manufacturing of sugar and jaggery from its juice. It is a grass growing to a height of 7-10 feet with nodes in between. The leaves are sharp edged, 3-4 feet long and 2-3 feet wide. Flowers are seen in clusters and are pale white coloured. Roots emerge from the inter-nodular buds.
Leaf sheaths – tight, smooth, glabrous except when young, blades – linear, lanceolate.

Chemical composition of sugarcane:
Sugarcane juice contains surcose (70–80% of soluble solids in the juice), glucose and fructose. Non-sugar constituents present in the cane juice are carbohydrates other than sugars. Asparagine and glutamine are prominent amino acids in the juice. Other amino acids include alanine, gamma- amino butyric acid, aspartic and glutamic acids, glycine, leucine, lysine, serine and tyrosine. The presence of phenylalanine, histidine, valine, pro- line, threonine and arginine, pipecolic acid, methionine and tryptophan has also been reported. Aconitic acid constitutes about three-fourths of the total carboxylic acid present in the juice. Vitamins present in the juice are: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, and vitamin D; enzymes include diastase, invertase, lactase, peroxidase, tyrosinase. Phenols in the cane juice are mainly polyphenols from tannin and antho- cyanin from the rind. Enzymes present in the seeds include large quantities of diastase and invertase. An ester, vanilloyl-1-O-beta-D-glucoside, has been isolated from the bagasse. The leaves contain alpha-amylase and glutathione-S-transferase.
It contains sugar, water, mucilage, resin, fat, albumin, guanin.

    Dear Dr Hebbar,

As it is difficult to produce sugarcane juice at home on a regular basis, people mostly drink it from the road side stalls since it is readily available to them without bothering to understand the unhygienic and ill effect of the same. The road side sugarcane juice is never healthy since sugarcanes are always exposed to dust and flies. People enjoy drinking sugarcane juice to quench their thrust because it is very sweet in taste and it becomes quite delicious after making it chilled by adding some ice pieces in the glass.

Instead of drinking sugarcane juice from the unhealthy atmosphere, it would be a better choice if thick and dark brownish coloured fresh sugarcane could be brought home and cut into small pieces by removing the outer hard skin and cleaned properly with water before chewing them. Chewing few pieces on empty stomach before meal or in between the meals would be safe decision instead of drinking sugarcane juice from road side.

    Best regards,
    Kunwar Singh

If the blood sugar level is well under control, half a cup of coconut water is fine. But sugarcane juice is unacceptable.

You both are right. Kunwar ji, you are absolutely right. But since i came to mumbai I found that most of the sugercane juice vendor keep the sugercane in dry cool place avoding dust and sunlight, Before taking jiuce they peel it lightly and they give it with ice and without ice. I usually prefer to go without ice and i recomment people too to use it without ice. I intake once in a day 100-150 ml. Now a days i am searchig if there is any drawback of taking cane juice. I appreciate your comments

        Dear Mr Nigam,

Thanks for accepting my views on sugarcane juice. Although, the roadside sugarcane vendors do scratch the canes to remove the toxicity from the surface but they are never washed properly with water and since they are kept in open space, they always gather dust and canes being sweet in nature, the vendors can’t control flies to sit on the canes and refrain them from making the cane dirty. Sugarcane juice is best tonic for liver but since the flies keep attacking the canes, I would suggest that drinking sugarcane juice from the open roadside outlets should be avoided to save the liver from getting damage from severe complications.

Sugarcane juice is not usually advised for the purpose of weight reduction and for diabetes.
Exercise, proper dose of medicine, active lifestyle, good diet control and inclusion of few herbs like Triphala and Amla are few methods to keep both diabetes and weight under control.

Sugarcane juice from road side vendor is of course not very hygienic. But nowadays, even in small cities, you get juice centers selling sugarcane juice. They are placed relatively distantly from the road side. We can see the quality of the sugarcane that they use, very easily and they are better as per my opinion. 🙂

Hi i have heard that the ganderi( ready made cut bites of sugarcane) are a cause of jaundice bcoz sometimes they are washed or kept in dirty water to keep them fresh and they soak up the contaminated water. Can jaundice or hapatitis be caused due to them???

Please stop taking sugarcane juice for a month to see if it is really contributing to heavy periods.
